Indian women want skirts - Sari on its way out?

"Indian women are spurning traditional saris and turning to Western attire, pushing up sales of trousers and skirts by 27 percent a year, according to a survey of India's top clothing retailers", reports The Times of India.

"With more women stepping out to work, the (combined) branded trouser and skirts market has been growing at a whopping 27 percent in sales terms," Images Multimedia publishing house said, citing the nationwide survey of retailers.

"Western influence is growing as people watch TV and films and style their own fashion in a contemporary manner," said Images editorial director R S Roy, adding both men and women were turning to high-priced branded clothing.

The survey, released Thursday, highlighted the growing trend among women to opt for Western wear instead of Indian attire such as saris and salwar kameez, a long shirt worn over baggy pajamas.
